Diversity Resources

Children’s Advocacy Centers of North Carolina recognizes that child abuse and neglect are linked with systemic inequity, and that looking at all power differentials is necessary to end child abuse and neglect. We commit to applying a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion lens to all our efforts and relationships. This lens will guide the evolution of our programs, initiatives, policies, and practices in a way that honors the inherent dignity of all people.

In our effort to serve the children and families of a diverse community most effectively, we embrace the following definitions of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Diversity

Understanding that everyone has their own unique story, we approach diversity in its broadest terms. To us, diversity celebrates the value of each individual and group. We recognize that people affiliate with multiple and intersecting identities, and that those identities can be fluid and shift over time. Therefore, our definition of diversity will also continue to evolve. It includes but is not limited to: race; ethnicity; gender; gender-identity; sexual orientation; national origin; citizenship; language; religion; age; physical, mental and developmental abilities; genetic information; veteran status; socio-economic status; geography; family dynamics and structures; education; physical appearance; ideas; perspectives; values; and life experiences.

Equity

Access, opportunity, and advancement are not experienced uniformly or universally in society. We recognize the existence of barriers – supported by individual, group, and institutional actions –that prevent the full participation of some. At CACNC, we work to identify and remove these barriers.

Inclusion

Inclusion is the intentional creation and preservation of environments in which every individual and group feels welcome, respected, and valued. At CACNC, all are seen, invited, encouraged, and supported to fully participate in processes, activities, and decision-making in a way that acknowledges privilege and works to eliminate power differentials.

We make this commitment because it’s the right thing to do, the best way to fulfill our mission, and the only way to live our values.
